Paying For It
June 6, 2008
Our wedding was also a reunion of sorts, as weddings often are. A lot of my friends hadn't seen each other in years, and many of them were there to see each other as much as for the wedding. I stood by as my friend (and officiator) Russell caught up with a mutual friend of ours.
"Are you getting any?" Russell asked the friend. "Any girlfriends?"
"Not really. Not right now," said our friend. "I was serious with a girl, we were together for about five years or so, but it didn't work out, and we had a horrendous breakup. On again, off again for a while, but now I'm out for good. It did a number on my head, and so I've been paying for it ever since."
"Paying for it, emotionally?" said Russell, "I hear you."
"Pfft, no, I mean sex," said our friend, who licked his thumb and began shelling out imaginary bills. "I've been paying for it ever since."
"Ha, well, sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do."
