Inquiring Minds

December 18, 2005

It was a month ago, or thereabouts, when Deborah asked to be banned from my blog. We had decided to stop seeing each other, and she knew that, unless I made it impossible for her to visit, she'd be tempted to torture herself with pictures and stories about what her ex-boyfriend was up to.

I'm rarely compelled to ban anyone, but it's easy enough to do.

You don't have permission to access this site on this server.

About a week later, we both changed our minds about the breakup, but the ban remained. "It's probably better if I don't read your site anyway," she said.

After all, as clearly as I try to write, there's still plenty of room for interpretation — or misinterpretation — and she figured there was already plenty of opportunity for that.

A couple of weeks later, we were hanging out at her apartment. She was busy making jewelry, and I went online to write a post. Since I couldn't post from her banned IP address, I restored access. She asked if I would keep it that way. Sure, no problem; however, her laptop is a battle-scarred antique from the last century, and it hangs and freezes so much that she rarely goes online anymore, so it was symbolic more than anything else. More often than not, what she sees of my blog is what I show her when she comes to my place.

"Someone commented the other day," I told her, "They want to know more about your mind — what makes you tick."

I dug around to find the comment and showed it to her.

Okay, so we've all seen and heard that Deborah is gorgeous (which she is), but what about talking about her mind? I'd like to know what makes her tick! and I'm sure others would, too...

"Who wrote that?" she asked.

"I have no idea," I said.

She thought it was funny that someone would comment anonymously to complain about not getting enough information about someone else. "People are funny," she said.

"Not only that, but I never say anything about your looks. I post plenty of pictures, and sometimes people comment on them, but I never write posts fawning over your beauty or anything like that."

She looked at me and cocked her head. "Yeah, I noticed that. Why not?”
